How to Use a Glass Filter Screen: The Official DHC Guide
By SHANNON GOFFEver opened a new piece or a subscription box and found a tiny, weird-looking glass flower or jack? We’ve all been there. You’re not alone if your first thought was, “What is this, and what am I supposed to do with it?”
Let’s break this down real quick. That little piece of glass is your new best friend for cleaner, tastier hits. This is our official how to use a glass filter screen guide, designed to get you from confused to confident in about two minutes.
What is a Glass Filter Screen?
A glass filter screen is a reusable accessory made from borosilicate glass that sits in your pipe's bowl to prevent ash and herb from being inhaled. Think of it as a bouncer for your bowl—it keeps the bad stuff (hot ash, scooby snacks) out and lets the good stuff (smooth smoke) in.
They typically come in two main shapes:
- Daisy/Flower: These have a rounded, petal-like top with a single glass stem on the bottom.
- Jack/Tripod: These look like the classic toy jacks, with multiple points to stand on.
Why Choose Glass Screens Over Metal?
Glass screens offer better flavor and are a preferred alternative for purity because they do not release unwanted compounds when heated, unlike some metal or brass screens. If you're tired of that weird metallic taste or concerned about what you’re inhaling, switching to glass is a good choice.
Here are the main reusable glass screen benefits:
- Purer Flavor: Glass is inert, meaning it won't alter the taste of your herb. You get the full flavor profile, hit after hit.
- Healthier Hits: The health benefits of glass screens vs. metal screens are clear. Borosilicate glass is built to handle heat without releasing sketchy fumes.
- Saves Money: Stop buying disposable metal screens. A single glass screen can last for years with proper care.
- Better Heat Distribution: These little guys are heat-absorbing glass screens for flavor, helping to vaporize your herb more evenly for a smoother, less harsh hit.
How to Use a Glass Filter Screen: Step-by-Step
Using a glass screen is way easier than it looks. We'll use the daisy style for this example, as it's the most common. This is our complete daisy glass screen installation guide.
- Grab Your Screen: Hold the daisy screen by its flat, flower-shaped top.
- Position the Stem: Insert the single glass stem on the bottom directly into the hole at the base of your clean bowl.
- Seat It Gently: Do not force or jam the screen in. It should sit securely in the hole, creating a stable, slightly elevated platform. If it's a bit snug, a tiny wiggle is all you need.
- Pack Your Bowl: Lightly pack your herb on top of the screen. The screen creates a barrier, so you don’t have to worry about the herb falling through.
- Light Up: You're good to go. Enjoy the smooth, ash-free hit.
How to Clean Your Glass Filter Screen
Your glass screen is reusable, but that means it needs a little TLC to stay fresh. Resin buildup is inevitable, but cleaning it is simple.
The best way to clean a glass screen is by soaking it in isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt to dissolve caked-on resin.
- Soak: Drop the screen into a small zip-top bag or container with isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher is best).
- Shake: Add a pinch of coarse salt for abrasion and shake it gently for about a minute.
- Rinse: Once the resin is gone, remove the screen (use tweezers!) and rinse it thoroughly with hot water.
- Dry: Let it air dry completely before using it again.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Installation & Use
How do I install a daisy-shaped glass screen? Insert the long, single stem of the daisy screen directly into the hole at the bottom of your pipe's bowl. Hold it by the flat "flower" top and place it gently—don't push too hard.
Which glass screen shape—daisy or jack—is better? Neither shape is definitively "better"; it depends on your bowl's shape. Daisies work great for standard, single-hole bowls. Jacks are often better for bowls with larger or uneven holes because their tripod base is more stable.
How do I pack a bowl with a glass screen inside?
Simply sprinkle your ground herb directly on top of the seated glass screen. It creates a false bottom, so you can pack without worrying about material falling into the pipe's stem.
Will a daisy screen stay in place during use? Yes, a correctly sized daisy screen should stay in place when you pack the bowl and during your session. If it shifts, it might be too small for your bowl's hole.Do glass screens really make draws more refined? Yes, they can enhance airflow and draw quality. The screen elevates the herb slightly, promoting more even burning and heat distribution, which can lead to a less intense and more enjoyable draw.
Benefits & Safety
Are glass filter screens truly more suitable for material purity than metal screens?
Yes, glass screens are widely considered a preferred option for purity because they are made from inert borosilicate glass. This material doesn't release potentially unwanted compounds or particulates when heated, which can be a consideration with some cheaper metal or brass screens.
How do glass screens improve flavor?
Glass screens improve flavor by providing a clean, non-reactive surface. Unlike metal, glass doesn’t impart a metallic taste, allowing you to experience the pure flavor of your herb.
Do glass screens really make hits smoother?
Yes, they can enhance airflow and smoothness. The screen elevates the herb slightly, promoting more even burning and heat distribution, which can lead to a less harsh and more enjoyable hit.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How often should I clean or replace a glass screen? You should clean your glass screen whenever you notice airflow is restricted or the taste is off, typically after 5-10 uses. You only need to replace it if it breaks or chips.
Can glass screens clog with resin? Yes, like any part of a pipe, glass screens can clog with resin. To fix this, simply soak the screen in isopropyl alcohol and salt, then rinse with hot water.
What's the best way to dry glass screens after cleaning? The best way is to let them air dry completely on a paper towel. Using a cloth towel can leave behind lint. Ensure it's 100% dry before placing it back in your bowl.
Troubleshooting
How do I choose the correct size glass screen for my bowl? The stem of the screen should fit snugly into your bowl's hole without being forced. If the screen can fall through the hole or wobbles excessively, it's too small. If you can't insert the stem, it's too big.
What should I do if my screen makes smoking more intense?
If your draws feel more intense, check that the screen isn't clogged with residue, as this can restrict airflow. A clean screen should always improve, not worsen, the refinement of a draw.

Unluckily, they don’t work in the old school metal pipes Kathy.
And Sandra, it probably would.
They’re handmade, so they stems vary in diameter. Some of the Dow stems are thinner and some thicker with a small amount being very thin or thick.
Another option for you would be a honeycomb screen, which is just a small glass or ceramic disc with 5-6 holes through it that sits at the bottom of your bowl. Personally, I like to use this type in all my bongs or handpipes with removable bowls, but they work just as well, if not better, than the glass daisy, star, and jack screens.
What it really comes down to is personal preference and the specific application (type of pipe) it’s being used with, but I always use one when I smoke! Try them, once you do you’ll never smoke a bowl again without one.
Hell, I carry them with me when I visit friends, and give them to all my friends. I love them so much. I haven’t smoked a bowl without one in years!
How do the glass screens work in the metal pipes?
yes I have an 8-inch very small glass pipe and I was wondering will this the whole for me and it’s some 1/2" from rim to rim
