Bong Bowls Explained

Also known as a bong slide, a bong bowl holds the dry herb, and is a critical piece of every water pipe or bong. Most bongs and other water pipes use a glass bong bowl or other removable slide, a glass-on-glass joint connection where it connects with the bong.

Bong bowls are made in a variety of joint sizes, but the most common option is a 14mm male bowl. Glass bongs nearly always come with a simple glass bowl slide, but you can always stick to an easy-to-use glass pipe if you’d prefer to stick to the basics.

Herb bowls come in a variety of different sizes (10mm and 18mm bowls are less common, with 14mm bowls more popular) and both male bowls and female bowls exist. It is critical to know the gender and joint size of your dab rig or water pipe when buying a new glass slide, or your bong and new bowl may well be incompatible. Never blow off water pipe joint sizes or gender.

Bowls can be made using a huge range of materials such as ceramic, colored glass, silicone, and stainless steel. Heavy borosilicate glass is the most durable, thick glass option. But even more basic glass bowls are made to create a host of unique glass blowing aesthetic effects such as metallic fuming or marbles. But you’re just as likely to see a sturdy, thick glass bowl in a basic size and shape as anything else.

What Does A Bong Bowl Do?

You had one job! Yes, a bong bowl has one big job, too: holding dry herbs through a smoke sesh. Often shaped like a glass funnel, the bowl draws smoke and heat through the bong. 

Remove the bowl piece after smoking all of the herbal material, and tap out any ash, and get ready for your next sesh.

How To Use a Bowl?

Typically you smoke a bowl with a hand pipe, but there are many ways to consume dry herb, from a one-hitter to bongs, bubblers, chillums, vaporizers, dab rigs, and more. The bowl itself is the round chamber that holds the cannabis in the pipe.

Get your cannabis into shape with a good grinder and pack your bowl piece. Not too tight! You don’t want to restrict airflow.

There is a small hole on the side of most glass pipes and other hand pipes called a carb. A carb cap covers that hole, although you can also cover it with your fingers. Burn your cannabis with a lighter or torch and inhale gently as you cover and then release the carb to control the burn and flow of air to the dry herb.

When you inhale smoke, that’s called a hit. Don’t waste your hits! Be sure to inhale deeply, even if it makes you cough. Hold your breath a little bit if you can.

To ensure your bong works right and you have a pleasant smoking experience, you need a bong bowl. Without an herb bowl, there’s no basis for either combustion or filtration.

Also, the adapter is typically male for the bong part and connects to the bowl with a female joint rather than a male joint.

Can I Use Cannabis Concentrates in My Bong Bowl

We don’t recommend it, unless it’s made for dabs. Waxes, shatter, and any other kinds of concentrates leave sticky residue inside the bong bowl and you’ll need to heat it to get it clean at all. Instead, always use a nail or banger to dab, vape, or smoke concentrates.
