A chillum is a straight, cone-shaped pipe built for a fast, simple hit, and DHC stocks glass chillums in colors, patterns, and fumed finishes that get better-looking with every session.
What Is a Chillum?
A chillum is a straight glass pipe with a cone-shaped bowl that runs in line with the tube, no bend, no carb hole, nothing extra. You pack the bowl end, light it, and pull straight through the other end, which is what makes it one of the simplest pipes you can own. Fumed glass chillums also shift color the more you use them, so the piece actually looks better with age instead of just getting dirty.
How Do You Use a Chillum?
Four steps, no carb to think about:
-
Pack the bowl end. Load ground herb loosely into the wider end, leaving room for air to move through.
-
Hold it tilted, not straight up. Keep the bowl angled slightly away from vertical so herb doesn't fall toward your mouth as you smoke.
-
Light and inhale together. There's no carb hole to cover or release, just light the herb while pulling steadily through the other end.
-
Let it clear, then set it down. Pull until the chamber clears, tap out the ash, and let it cool before you repack.
How Do You Clean a Chillum?
The straight tube makes this one of the easier pipes to clean:
-
Add alcohol and salt. Pour isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt into the tube.
-
Cover both ends and shake. Shake for about two minutes so the mixture reaches the full length of the tube.
-
Let it soak, then rinse. Give it about an hour, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
What's the Difference Between a Chillum and a One-Hitter?
Chillums generally have a larger bowl than a one-hitter, so you can pack more herb per session instead of just a single pull. A one-hitter is built around conserving herb and taking a single, small hit at a time, while a chillum gives you a bit more flexibility for a longer personal session. Both are compact and easy to carry, they just suit slightly different smoking habits.
If you want to compare this shape to other hand pipes, our bubblers, sherlock pipes, and spoon pipes collections cover the rest of what we carry, and a silicone chillum is worth a look if durability matters more to you than glass. If you're after something built around single, portioned hits instead, dugouts pair a chillum or one-hitter with its own stash compartment.
